Why You Should Winterize your Swimming Pool

A swimming pool brings great fun and enjoyment for a family, but unless you live in a warm climate, you will need to take preparations during the winter months to ensure that your swimming pool remains in proper working order.

There are two different types of pools, in ground and above ground. It is important to make sure that you winterize both types of pools as well as spas. Some of the most important steps to undergo for winterizing pools include cleaning the pools and making sure that they are free from debris and leaves, adding pool cleaning chemicals to prevent the growth of algae or bacteria during the winter months, preparing the motor or pump by draining it and removing it from the pool, and securely covering the pool to ensure that it is adequately protected and guarded from the winter elements.

It is also important to realize that all of your pool accessories must also be stored away safely during the winter months as these can become ruined if left to the rain, snow, or freezing temperatures. Clean all accessories thoroughly and dry them before storing them in a cool dry place. Be sure to remove all traces of air from your inflatable items before storing them as well.

Pool ladders should not be left outside during the winter months. It may be tempting to leave them in the yard, but they will undoubtedly succumb to the harsh temperatures and will become damaged. If storage space is a concern, then try taking the ladder apart, saving all hardware in a container or plastic bag that is labeled and stored with the ladder.

The pool will need to be cleaned thoroughly and the proper amount of chemicals added to the water before placing the cover on your pool. You may feel most comfortable hiring a professional to help with this process, especially if you have an in ground pool and need to have the underground lines blown out. However, if you are going to perform this task yourself, be sure to follow the guidelines set forth by your pool’s manufacturer. There are most likely specific chemicals recommended for your pool depending upon the type of liner your pool has, as well as the company that made your pool. When adding chemicals to your pool yourself, it is imperative that you follow all instructions accordingly and store chemicals safely out of the reach of children. You can choose to store any unused pool chemicals throughout the winter months as well, provided that they are in a sealed container, labeled correctly, and kept out of the reach of children in a climate controlled environment.

In conclusion, you will need to drain all filters, pool heaters, the pump and motor, as well as any above ground hoses before storing pool equipment for the winter and covering the pool. If you have any doubts or questions regarding winterizing your pool, it is advised to hire a professional rather then find the next spring that there has been serious damage done to your pool.
